Statement

My paintings are attempts at coherent response to situations I find stunning. Light bounces over the subjects, both close and at a great distance. It comes to our eyes as a pattern of color. To our brains and our hearts, as a sensation. We want to keep looking and feeling. I hope for my paintings to have a similar pull.

My work is based on observing nature, which gives a tasty vocabulary within the language of color. I work this language to make a light, a captivating order. There may be narration, humor, solace, evocation and representation in the paintings, but I want these to be a sensed and a human experience, not just a description.

One collector told me, after looking at paintings all day, she still wants to look at mine, more than when she first bought them. A writer calls the paintings visceral. These compliments mean the most to me because they best convey what draws me into painting, and what I hope others find in my work: the magnet like draw to look at something because it renews us, and physicality associated with what we see.
