I am a painter living on the Blue Hill Peninsula of the Maine Coast.   My paintings are responses to stunning experiences of color and light.

Much of my work begins with color progressions, inside and out, of a specific old, island house.  A narrative enters once the figure appears.  I enjoy the tension between this narrative, working from direct observation, memory, and the formal needs of the painting.   On-going series also deal with light emanating from water, land, architecture and air.  I painted the "gray series" from small sketches made when sitting in the snow, while the palette comes from a show of 19th century photos I saw at the Philips Collection.  Nature calls our attention like a magnet; I try to make my paintings have a similar pull, not as description, but as visceral experience.

Thank you for looking at my work; please feel free to contact me with questions, comments and inquires about purchases.
